Sounds of Appalachia: Traditional Music History, Performance, and Hands-On Program

Appalachian folk music is a musical style inspired by the Scots-Irish, English, and other European immigrants, and included ballads, fiddle tunes, reels and Sacred Harp singing. Some of the rhythms and instruments also came from African American traditions creating a totally new American Folk style that builds from the notes of fiddles, banjos, and dulcimers. The Appalachian dulcimer is a true American folk instrument developed by the people of the Appalachian Mountains. Learn more about the music that these mountains made by attending this volunteer-led program. Attendees will enjoy a history of Appalachian music, a performance of traditional Appalachian songs, and an opportunity to strum a few simple tunes on the Appalachian Dulcimer.
